Despite the terror and poor living conditions of the camp, Jim survives by establishing a successful trading network-which even involves the camp's commander, Sergeant Nagata. It is now 1945, nearing the end of the Pacific War and World War II. The trio are taken prisoner, transported to the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Centre in Shanghai for processing, and ultimately sent to an internment camp in Suzhou. Jamie is surprised to see lights on in his family home and thinks his parents have returned, only to discover it is occupied by Japanese troops. Unable to sell Jamie for money, they intend to abandon him in the streets, but Jamie offers to lead them to his neighbourhood to loot the empty houses there. After being chased by a street urchin, he is taken in by two American expatriates and hustlers, Basie and Frank. Hungry, Jamie tries surrendering to Japanese soldiers, who ignore him. After a length of time alone and having eaten the little remaining food, he ventures back into the city. Jamie makes his way back to their house, assuming they will return. As the Graham family evacuate the city, Jamie is separated from his parents in the ensuing chaos. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan begins occupying the settlement. However, the film was not initially a commercial success, earning only $22 million at the US box office, although it eventually more than recouped its budget through revenues in foreign markets, home video, and television. The film received positive reviews, with praise towards Bale's performance, the cinematography, the visuals, Williams's score and Spielberg's direction. He considers it to be his most profound work on "the loss of innocence". Spielberg was attracted to directing the film because of a personal connection to Lean's films and World War II topics. Harold Becker and David Lean were originally to direct before Spielberg came on board, initially as a producer for Lean. The film tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham ( Christian Bale), a young boy who goes from living with his wealthy British family in Shanghai to becoming a prisoner of war in an internment camp operated by the Japanese during World War II. Palmer and Maria are also effective in their respective roles.Empire of the Sun is a 1987 American epic coming-of-age war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tom Stoppard, based on J. Perhaps he'll excel in the upcoming Annabelle sequel which has a premise with lots of potential. Sandberg tries his best to keep the concept going however and his direction shows promise. The short story succeeds precisely because the initial scare is clever and the concept holds steam within the few minutes the story takes to finish - however, this feature length Lights Out loses steam, purely because whilst the initial scares are cleverly put together, the audience becomes so familiar with the concept that the would-be scares no longer terrify, but in some instances become comical. This presence can only be seen - yep you guessed it - when the lights are out. It tells the story of a mother (Maria Bello) and daughter (Teresa Palmer) and their estranged relationship, brought about in part by the mother's mental illness and also a ghostly presence that has latched itself on to the mother. As a young girl growing up, she was never really sure of what was real when the lights went out at night. When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought that her childhood fears were behind her.
